Role Overview
As a Tax Director, you will lead and scale our tax line of service, owning both technical excellence and operational performance. This is a leadership role responsible for driving profitability, optimizing processes, and elevating client experience across our entire tax practice.
You will partner closely with the executive team to shape strategy, implement scalable systems, and ensure our tax function operates at the highest level of quality, efficiency, and impact.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
- Own the overall performance and profitability of the tax line of service
- Serve as a key member of the leadership team, driving cross-functional initiatives
- Lead prioritization processes to ensure effective execution across the tax book of business
- Establish and refine client communication strategy and tax season execution plans
Operations & Process Optimization
- Own and continuously improve tax operations, workflows, and technology stack
- Implement new policies, tools, and processes to adapt to client needs and regulatory changes
- Ensure accurate tracking and visibility of:
- P&L by service line, manager, and staff
- Gross profit, net profit, and EBITDA/FTE
- Drive efficiency, scalability, and process standardization
Team Leadership & Development
- Manage and develop managers and staff to increase utilization, performance, and growth
- Lead coaching, training, and prioritization meetings to improve team output
- Own compensation structures including bonuses tied to performance metrics
- Foster a culture of accountability, high standards, and continuous improvement
Client & Technical Excellence
- Provide high-level tax strategy and technical guidance across complex client issues
- Resolve or research advanced tax matters with minimal escalation
- Ensure exceptional client communication, responsiveness, and deadline management
- Support and drive cross-selling opportunities across service lines
Financial Performance
- Own and deliver on financial targets for the tax practice, including:
- Revenue growth
- Gross and net profit margins
- Monitor and optimize team utilization and capacity planning
- Drive sustainable growth of the tax book of business
Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in public accounting or tax leadership roles
- Proven experience managing teams, processes, and client portfolios at scale
- Strong technical expertise across complex tax areas (business entities, multi-state, high-net-worth)
- Demonstrated ability to own P&L, drive profitability, and improve operations
- Experience implementing or optimizing tax technology and workflows
- CPA or EA designation preferred
